Music Video 1 - Stormzy 'Big For Your Boots'

How does Goodwin's theory adhere/challenge this music video?

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine)
This is a very urban music so it adheres to Goodwins theory as Stormy is seen in a council estate with roadmen (wearing trackies) and a local chicken shop

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
In Stormzys music video there is no relationship between the lyrics and visuals so this would challenge Goodwins Theory.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
The music is fast pace and lyrics are quick which matches to the visuals as theres lots of fast pace shots and there is a clear link between the lyrics and visuals.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)
This adheres to this music video as there are loads of close up shots of Stormzy which makes him the centre of attention and he does develop motifs which are shown in all of his videos, e.g. wearing tracksuits, hanging with friends.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
This challenges Goodwin's theory because there is no reference to sexuality.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc)
There is no reference to any other media text.

  1. Well done Darcie, this looks good!
Get into the habit of pushing your responses further. I.e. what is the reason that the lyrics match the visuals? Is it to reinforce a message? Exaggerate something?
